Lähimatkailua

Meillä on onni asua yhden Turun kauneimman rakennuksen naapurissa. Mikaelinkirkko valmistui 1905 ja sen suunnitteli 1800-luvun lopulla Lars Sonck, joka oli vasta 24-vuotias opiskelija voittaessaan suunnittelukilpailun. Pahennusta seurasi, luonnollisesti. Sonck ei itsekään ollut myöhemmin nuoruudenteokseensa tyytyväinen ja vaati siihen muutoksia, joista osa toteutettiinkin. Kuulemani mukaan Sonck ei Turussa käydessään halunnut nähdäkään luomustaan.

Sonck varmaankin olisi kieltäytynyt aamiaisesta meidän keittiössämme. Minä sen sijaan istuskelen vallan mielelläni ruokapöydän ääressä ja katselen tätä komistusta. Opiskeluaikana mulla oli tapana pitää tentin luvusta taukoa ja kävellä kirkon ympäri. Rakennus on täynnä hienoja luontoteemaisia yksityiskohtia, jotka näkee vain, kun menee ihan lähelle. Esimerkiksi ikkunoiden alla on rivit sieniä, jotka kaikki ovat hiukan erilaisia.

Muistan vieläkin ensimmäisen kerran, kun astuin sisälle kirkkoon. Tuon goottilaisen ulkoasun perustella olin odottanut jotakin tummaa ja mahtipontista, mutta sisällä odottaakin yllätys.

We are lucky to live just across the street from one of the most beautiful buildings in Turku. St Michael's Church was designed by young Lars Sonck in late 19th century and the building was finished in 1905. Sonck was a 24-year-old student when he designed it and his winning of the design competition was a bit of a scandal. Apparently he was not happy with the design himself later on and did not want to see it when he was visiting Turku.

I see it every day when I sit in the kitchen and still love the view after over 20 years. The building is full of details inspired by the nature. For example there are different mushrooms carved on the wells underneath all the big windows.

I still remember the first time I entered the chirch. Because of the gothic exterior I expected it to be dark and gloomy. But there is a big surprise hiding inside the walls. I've never seen flowers, owls and snakes at the altar at any other church.
